Do I need an International Driving Permit in Thailand?
For visitors on a short trip. The rules depend on where your license was issued. Last reviewed November 3, 2026.
Short answer: Yes, for most visitors. Thailand expects drivers with a foreign license to carry an official International Driving Permit with it, and police checkpoints often ask for it. A translation does not replace the IDP. Get it before you travel from the official issuer in the country that issued your license.
