Do I need an International Driving Permit in France?
For visitors on a short trip. The rules depend on where your license was issued. Last reviewed November 3, 2026.
Short answer: Not if your license is from the EU or EEA, which France accepts as it is. Visitors with other licenses can usually drive for up to a year, but if the license isn't in French, police or rental staff may ask for an official translation or an International Driving Permit. A French translation of your license makes those checks easier.
